Sandflies, the only pesky insect Ive encountered. Theyre twice the size of a noseeum but their bite is the same. They are slow to land and bite and seem to like dark surfaces more than skin. Wonder of wonders they disappear completely after dark. These were in the morning after camping in the sand. As bad as they look here I wore gloves as I packed up, they like the backs of hands, and very few landed on my face. Have now finished my seven day hike around the north end of Stewart Island. Used up the last of my food supply this morning. Had four people along the way offer up some of theirs to help me out. A NZ Wilderness magazine in one of the huts rated the Northwest Circuit Track as moderate to difficult with the comment a rugged track for the hardy. So soley by chance I picked a good one to cut my NZ tramping teeth on. When I started out it was not my intention to do it all. When the first couple offered some of their food supply those good vibes inspired me to go for it. Had to not do the usual and stay at every hut. I skipped huts three times making for some long days. A challenging but very rewarding tramp it was. Northward ho!
