Sanskrit literature is so rich in metaphors, clever use of synonyms, double meanings and all manner of grammatical and phonetic devices that a satisfactory translation of any great Sanskrit work is impossible. Translations, according to A L Basham, merely tarnish the beauty of the original. The climactic canto of Kalidasas magnum opus Kumarasambhavam, which portrays the courtship of Shiva and His divine consort, is a depiction of all shades of love at their most consummate - and Kalidasa has done glorious justice to the portrayal. Indeed,to witness the sheer delight with which a Sanskrit scholar savors the delicious lines of Kalidasa is to be convinced that the effort to learn this arcane language is bound to be eminently rewarded. ~ Adapted from John Keays India - A History.
