Sargeant Christmas Newsletter Santa has been working the cyber sales and found some great bargoons for the upcoming celebration. It’s Christmas time again and my computer screen is festooned with ribbons and balls in merry Yuletide livery. youtu.be/iO7ySn-Swwc And now the news: On the 18th of December last year, final financing for the Currie Memorial was confirmed. This allowed our faithful committee to commit to hiring a sculptor to create the Currie Statue. Planning for the unveiling began immediately, lining up a band, four platoons of Cadets and a small cavalry squadron. We got Professor Hyatt, retired from Western University, to be Master of Ceremonies. One of the final occasions by Lieutenant Governor David Onley was to unveil the statue on the 4th of August along with a goodly representation from the Currie descendants. Picture is of the exceptional members of the Committee along with the sculptor and our master of Ceremonies. Like my hat? John-Paul and his family came down from Bolton, and Olivia from B.C. Louise and Noel joined the Sargeant representation. I guess they thought their old dad, wasn’t too bad after all. youtu.be/qJ_MGWio-vc?list=RDn543eKIdbUI Just after the statue unveiling, Louise and I caught a plane for Newfoundland and explored the Northern Peninsula, Gander, and St John’s areas. Had a small rental flat in St John’s for a few days and did trips from there. Loved the Northern Peninsula and Rocky Harbour, St Anthony of the potholes, and L’Ainse aux Meadows with its Viking heritage. There’s no place like it. Had a chance to make connections with a few relatives this year. Nick Sargeant, my cousin, and I shared a sandwich together and had a lovely chat. Robert McNair, a boyhood friend, and I finally linked up after 20 years and took up the conversation where we left off. Strange how that works. Got to go to grand-daughter Maggie’s baptism in March. She is a live-wire and a constant amusement. youtu.be/qu5RY94ldDc?list=RDn543eKIdbUI Sad news in May that brother in law Otto Monreal passed away from a heart attack while working on the farm. He was found in a field when he didn’t return home on time. This gentle man leaves a large hole in the family tapestry. Early in May, I went to Kingston for the Annual 21st Battalion Trench Raid. This has become an annual pilgrimage and I’ve met some wonderful folks in the process. September found us in Stouffville area as we celebrated Uncle Lloyd Bolender’s birthday. Great time with relatives and friends who filled the restaurant. We then took off for Owen Sound area for a road trip. This year we lost a long time friend and buddy Elinore Haas Moody. Always a cheerful soul, she gave the “joy of the Lord” wherever she went. Noel has been working on a movie. He caused major concern that there was a terrible multi-vehicle accident on Veteran’s Parkway here in London, when he staged a car accident for the movie. Still doing repairs and renovations for a living. He also rescues us when something goes amok in our condo. Rob was part of the RIMPAC operation in Hawaii this summer. Poor guy had to stay in a hotel on the beach and order parts for the planes that took part in the exercise. Sure is tough being in the Airforce. youtu.be/gIoSga7tZPg Olivia is facing some surgery as she’s having trouble with her knees. Standing at work all day does take a toll. Andre was promoted to team leader at McDonalds as well as doing computer work that reflects his training. John-Paul and Sabina are more or less back to a normal routine. She operates Il Villagio Ristorante (you gotta eat there!), and Jay is working free lance on a number of projects for an installation company in Toronto. Look for the CIBC kiosks at Pearson Airport. Miss Emma is in prekindergarten now and says she likes it. Wait till she gets to calculus and then we’ll see. Miss Maggie continues to amuse us and keep our spirits jolly. She was able to let her mom back in the house when the door to the garage shut and locked! Picture is Emma heading off to first day of school. Jay asked if I wanted to have a ride in his new Jeep. Sure I said, little knowing he would do donuts in the parking lot and scare his father. Kids. Sarge got a phone call from Veteran’s Affairs saying that he had been nominated to receive the Veteran’s Affairs Citation. Attended a dinner in Toronto and was given the citation by Minister Fantino. That’s all the news from Bear Creek for this year. In all the celebration and advertising rattle, may the true meaning of the Season be found in each heart. Love to all John & Louise youtu.be/GGUzkUMXNCc
