Sassa promises grants will be paid Friday GOGO Agnes Didi (73) is just one of more than 100 000 pensioners in Mzansi who had to go without their South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) grant this month. The gogo from Zwelitsha in Nyanga, Eastern Cape, received a letter saying she must go to the Sassa office to re-apply for her grant but she can’t walk and suffers from diabetes, high blood pressure, arthritis and heart disease. “I was told they will come to my house,” the gogo said. “But that was in June and nothing has been done to start my application process.” She lives with her grandson and they depend on her money. According to Sassa the tragedy of more than 100 000 pensioners having to go without money, is because it can’t conduct home visits to all the people who are over 75 to re-register them for the Sassa database. Earlier reports said a list containing the names and addresses of recipients who needed to be visited for verification purposes had been lost. The DA in the Western Cape said it received reports that more than 1 500 elderly citizens will not receive their grants this month although Sassa said grants will not be stopped until all home visits were completed. “The DA will submit Parliamentary questions to determine the extent of the re-registration backlog throughout the country,” said DA Social Development Shadow Minister Mike Waters. Black Sash representative Leonie Caroline said: “We have been saddened by the news that social grants will not be received this month. The beneficiaries who are not physically able to go to Sassa centres to enrol on the new system were promised these home visits.” But Paseka Letsatsi, Sassa spokesman, said they have now reconciled all the lists of those affected by non-payment of their grants in the past month. “Sassa can now assure those affected that they will get the payment by Friday,” said Letsatsi.
