Satellite devices for fishing vessels in North welcomed by Ferris News that the agriculture minister in the North, Michelle O’Neill MLA, has got funding to fit satellite-tracking devices to fishing boats free of charge to fishermen and women has been welcomed by Sinn Féin spokesperson on agriculture and the marine, Martin Ferris TD. The funding, from the EU, allows the minister to start a scheme so that boats over 12 metres in length can be fitted with the devices. Martin Ferris said: “This is a very positive move, which will allow the services to find vessels in an emergency situation. “When there is an accident at sea, the time it takes to find a vessel is crucial and so it is important that every method available is used to improve safety in the fishing industry.” The minister for agriculture, Michelle O’Neill MLA, has got funding of£200,000, most of it coming from the EU. The scheme will begin on 1 December and she has called on those in the fishing industry to engage with her office to have the devices fitted as soon as possible.
