Saturday, November 22, 2:00 PM SDFF Sie FilmCenter Sunday, November 23, 6:30 PM SDFF Sie FilmCenter Born a Dalit, or “untouchable,” Thulasi is determined to fight her way out of poverty and into the professional boxing ring. She calls herself “a one woman army.” Writers/directors Beathe Hofseth and Susann Østigaard document her pursuit of independence in Light Fly, Fly High. We see Thulasi rebelling against India’s caste system, an arranged marriage, and a male-dominated boxing association. Footage of her matches as a Light Fly Weight contender and her interactions with a corrupt coach carries a true sense of female power. Thulasi’s parents refuse to support her boxing dream. She runs away at age fourteen and finds refuge in another family, who take out loans to pay her expenses. Driven to excel, she trains and works her way up. In her mid-twenties, age and injuries threaten her goal of winning and landing a government job. Tension mounts as the national tournament approaches. We discover Thulasi has much more at stake than medals.
