Saturday of the Sixth Week of Easter (Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary). Year A. Reflection by Rev. Fr. Kevin Oselumhense Anetor ( Uromi Diocese Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear (Lk.1:42) Once I got in a bus from Lagos to Benin City. On our way, one hungry looking man stood up and started preaching. We didnt disturb him until he began talking about Mary. He started saying some very derogatory things about our Blessed Mother, and thats when my head snapped... I immediately took him up, and all inside the bus were compelled to watch the unfolding drama... Note that Angel Gabriel greets this woman thus: Greetings, you who are highly favoured! The Lord is with you (Lk.1:28). This is a Heavenly being, greeting a human being in this manner. Again, today, Elizabeth, a woman far older than Mary says to her Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear . But why am I so favoured, that the mother of my Lord should come to me (vv.42-43). Isnt the above found in Scripture? Why then do we readily listen to the mere rantings of so many self-acclaimed men and women of God, who know nothing at all about Mary? Sometime last year, an audio cd made the waves. A woman recorded her so-called experience in hell and heaven. She said many derogatory things about the blessed Mother. Even some Catholics believed her. What a shame! Today, we hear the testimony of Elizabeth. She wasnt envious of Mary. She remained humble and couldnt imagine that Mary would come to see her. Mary on her own wasnt filled with unnecessary airs of pride. She remained humble and subservient to Gods will. All she could think about was that her cousin needed her help, and off she went, over the hills, without minding her own state, and the divine dignity of the child she carried in her womb. Today one can hardly find this humility and readiness to serve anywhere. If God were to require the services of a woman today, or even a man, How quickly do you think He would (could) find one? Prayer Father, we thank You for life, for family, relatives and friends. Today, make us humble like the Virgin Mary and Elizabeth. May we never fail to render assistance to our neighbours, especially the aged. And through Marys intercession, may we learn to say a constant and consistent YES to Your will for us, through Christ our Lord, Amen. Good morning. Happy Feast Day. Have a wonderful Rosary Carnival Celebration. God bless your weekend. May Devotion ends today. But keep praying the rosary...
