Saturday results from the MAAC, courtesy of John Wooding, Iona 89, George Mason 73 Sean Armand led a parade of five Iona scorers in double figures, with 30 points, as the Gaels upended previously unbeaten George Mason. The Gaels, now 2-2, jumped out to a 14-0 lead and led by as many as 29 in the first half. A.J. English added 18 points and six assists, while David Laury narrowly missed a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds. Tre Bowman contributed 11 points and Mike Poole 10. The Gaels hit for 50 percent from the field. No. 3 Louisville 71, Fairfield 57, Hall of Fame Tipoff Tournament, ESPN3 Montrezi Harrell scored 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as No. 3 ranked Louisville defeated pesky Fairfield 71-57 in the Naismith Memorial Tipoff Tournament at Mohegan Sun. The Stags led by as many as five in the first half and were up 11-9 midway through the half before Louisville went on a 28-12 run to take a 37-23 halftime edge. Chris Jones led the Cardinals with 15 points, while Montrezl Harrell added 14 points and 12 rebounds. The 5-0 Cardinals extended their winning streak to 21 games, including last seasons run to the NCAA championship. Fairfield, now 1-4, was led by Maurice Barrow with 14 points and Marcus Gilbert with 11. Loyola Marymount 76, Marist 70, Paradise Jam Marist broke out to a 20-7 lead in the first half, and held a 33-32 advantage at halftime. Loyola Marymount took the lead for good when it went up 41-40 with 14:03 remaining in the contest. Marist pulled to with two on five occasions on the second half, and trailed by three with 3:55 left when Chavaughn Lewis hit a three-point play. Lewis led the Red Foxes with 19 points, while Jay Bowie added 16 points and seven rebounds. Senior center Adam Kemp scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds. The 70 points was a season-high for the Red Foxes. Rider 89, Central Connecticut State 73 Rider shot 51 per cent from the floor, including 8-of-17 from beyond the three-point arc, to earn the road win, and its first victory of the season. Sophomore guard Zedric Sandler scored 21 points and senior Anthony Myles added 19 for the Broncs. Daniel Stewart added 17 points and 10 rebounds, and Khalil Alford contributed 10 points. The Broncs trailed 12-3 early in the game, but turned it around in the first half and had a 44-28 lead at the break. Saint Peter’s 67, Fairleigh Dickinson 63 Desi Washington scored 21 points and hit 3-of-5 three-point attempts, to pace the Peacocks to their first win of the year. Saint Peter’s took a 33-29 lead at the half, but FDU rallied to take 45-41 lead in the second. With the score tied at 50-50, Saint Peter’s launched an 8-0 run to take the lead for good . Junior forward Marvin Dominque added 11 points and 11 rebounds, and Quadir Weldon and Jamel Field each scored nine points. Kent State 102, Niagara 97 Niagara trailed by as many as 11 point in the first half, but closed the gap at halftime to 44-43 with a 10-2 run. The Purple Eagles opened the second half connecting on seven of their first eight shots to grab a 61-58 lead. Kent State responded with a 19-4, but Niagara would not be denied and closed to within three points in the final second before falling. Antoine Mason scored 31 points and Ramone Snowden added 21 for the Purple Eagles.
