Saturday was the last official day of the SNAP challenge. For lunch and supper I had the other two cups of the ground beef dish I had made with rice. That meant the total for Saturday was $4.28. Going back over the entire week, my total was $28.31 (if I omit the supper with a friend). If I had not gone out for that social occasion, I could have had another can of the soup I purchased at the sale price of $1.50. That would have made the total for the week $29.81. That is over the $28.42 which the daily allotment would be for a week. That is 6% over the allowance. Imagine, over and I used no spices to add flavor, no onions or other usual additions to a ground beef dish, I had no crackers with the soup I ate, I only drank water except for the glass of milk that I had for breakfast. There were no fruits and vegetables with a meat dish as a nutritionist would advise. The servings of the meat dishes were one cup. Just think how different that is from your normal approach to eating...and imagine that as the way you have to live and feed your family. It is no wonder that all the Food Pantries in the area are finding such a high demand for their services. I know we are approaching a time when most of our dinner tables will be crowded with dishes and our worry will be about leftovers...think about never having enough instead,,,not in some distant place but in our own communities. And remember this isnt a week challenge for many people but a way of life.
