Save those toes! I hear the roars about sore toes, dead toes and numb toes when Ricky gets in after long runs, not all the time, but more often than not. Why her not me? Let’s just say, my feet don’t look good in 3inch heels with pointy toes. It’s from wearing heels all week and your foot is at a 90 degree angle and then falling into a pair of runners. Metatarsalgia, also known as stone bruise, is a type of pain and inflammation that occurs in a part of the foot known as the metatarsal (ball of foot). It often occurs in the metatarsal heads - where the three middle toes meet the ball of the foot. It is a common problem which can affect the bones and joints of the metatarsals. Most commonly, the first metatarsal head is affected - the ball of the foot just behind the big toe. The severity of the pain can vary and may affect just one or two toes - sometimes the whole foot or even both feet might be affected. It’s a condition more common in women than men because of the heels. Each of our feet is made up of 26 major bones, 33 joints, 107 ligaments, and 19 muscles and tendons. Leonardo Da Vinci was right on when he called the human foot "a masterpiece of engineering and a work of art." Our feet are designed to provide us with a balanced and stable foundation as we walk or run over many different types of terrain. When we walk, our feet bear the force of one and one-half times our body weight. When we run, this force increases to three to four times our body weight. Wearing high heels can create faulty biomechanics and unnecessary stress on your toes. I wouldn’t dare suggest boxing them up and putting them away in the back of the closet , however, I’d suggest always keeping a comfy pair of flats/ runners to the ready when you’re driving or heading out on your lunch break from work to help save the toes and make for pain free runs. You don’t need to be at a 90 degrees angle 8 hours a day.
