Saw Expendables 3 last night. It was basically a 2 hour video game. I put the body count over/under at about 500. The first 20 minutes was like a James Bond opening on steroids and was the worst part of the movie. Despite the quite salty language and unintelligible dialogue things got better and the climactic confrontation in some mythical East European country that ended in stan (filmed in Bulgaria) was actually moderately entertaining. The cast was the same as the earlier movies in the series but without Mickey Rourke and Bruce Willis. There were several new characters including 4 young guns. Among them was MMA star Ronda Rousey. My appraisal of the cast performances is as follows: Stallone: Hard to remember that his performance in Rocky was really good. He was hard to watch at times. The acting was that bad. Arnold Schwarzenegger: Didnt have much to do and lacked his typical great one-liners. Jet Li. On screen for all of 3 minutes. Wesley Snipes: A good addition and the best line of the movie. I wont ruin it. Antonio Banderas: Comic relief and entertaining at first before the schtick became annoying. I kept thinking I was watching Puss N. Boots. Kelsey Grammer: About a 10 minute role that was better than expected. Dont worry, he was not in any action scenes. Statham, Couture and Ludngren: Retreads from the first 2 movies. Harrison Ford: One of the better characters in the movie as a hard-nosed CIA guy. And finally - Mel Gibson played the former Expendable turned bad guy. He was by far the best thing about the movie. He reminded me that before his personal life imploded he was a really good actor. His early movie, The Year of Living Dangerously remains one of my all-time favorites. Bottom line: Go see it at a rainy bargain matinee or wait until it hits the screen at Marketplace for the $2.50 showing.
