Saw Humpty Sharma ki Dulhaniya. It is a fantastic, thoroughly - TopicsExpress

Saw Humpty Sharma ki Dulhaniya. It is a fantastic, thoroughly entertaining film. It conveys freshness, is energetic and is several steps ahead of a typical boy-meets girl romcom. It is one of the best debut films I have seen of late. As far as proficiency of writing & direction goes, it is on par with a Wake up Sid or an Udaan. Albeit, it is in no way comparable coz the genre, theme, setting of HSKD is completely different. It is a mainstream, filmy rom-com. And it delivers. Bang on! Debutant writer-director Shashank Khaitan is surely the next quality filmmaking entrant in the industry. The writing is fabulous. HSKD is an outstanding example of how to take cliche, been-there-done-that situations and give it a fresh new twist. No far-fetched situations and unreal dialogues. Everyone says that script is king. The script of HSKD is not only king, but it also RULES! The direction is fresh, surprisingly slick (for a debut film) and squeaky clean. No melodrama, no dragging of scenes, no farfetched situations. Almost nothing is unrealistic. The song Samjhawan is special. So is Saturday Saturday (end credits) and Daingad Daingad. The other 2 music video type songs are the only aspect of HSKD which is average. Cinematography (Neha Parti), Sound (Sohel Sanwari) and Editing are all perfect. The good thing is that none of these tried to become the star of the film, nor were they glitchy that one noticed. They all combined perfectly to give the audience a well rounded slick finished product. Performances & Casting are the icing on the cake. Firstly, Varun Dhawan looks really good and acts really really well too. Its amazing how hes got the Dilli-Hindi accent & mannerisms perfectly. Alia continues to excel. Film after film. Like the law of averages does not apply to her. Ashutosh Rana in a completely different new avatar delivers a fantastic performance. He exemplifies what acting with your eyes means. All the other ensemble actors deliver competently. But the sleeper hit of this film is a debutant actor - Sahil Vaid (plays the character Poplu). Awesome performance. Had the audience in splits throughout. All-in-all, Humpty Sharma ki Dulhaniya is a fabulous film. Go see it in the theatres. Atleast twice! P.S. - I always thought that DDLJ was a slightly overrated film. It was good & all, but not at the level that the world took it to back then. However, if DDLJ can inspire this film, I will admit that I now stand corrected. P.P.S. - I am so very proud of all the Whistling Woods alumni who make up the cast & crew of HSKD. Starting with director-writer Shashank Khaitan, audiographer Sohel Sanwari, Asst Directors Bhanu Pratap Singh and Varun Machhar, Script and continuity supervisor Swati Trivedi and actors Sahil Vaid, Aditya Sharma & Jimmy Varyani. All of you guys have reinforced the belief I have in Whistling Woods and what we are trying to do here. Thank you all so much for doing this.
