Saw Interstellar on Friday. Have mixed feelings as it deserves a lot of credit for its breath-taking visuals and ambition, but ultimately and sadly it falls short of being a film for the ages. Which kind of breaks my heart as I love high concept sci-fi. Nolan, Hollywoods bankable auteur, sees everything in pictures and is perhaps only behind Michael Mann amongst working directors for what he can put up on the big screen. He also has brilliant, original ideas – for example, he wrote the screenplays for Inception and Memento. When you combine these rare twin talents of conceptual and visual genius, you should arrive at Stanley Kubrick. Except you don’t. Because Kubrick had a lot more to offer. He was also a genius at character development and forcing career-defining performances out of actors. The only film I’ve seen by Nolan that manages this is Memento. Nolan also has a truly horrible habit of writing sentimental, slushy dialogue. Way too many times I cringed while watching Interstellar. I just don’t think Nolan watches and listens to how people speak. Because you couldn’t write like that if you did. That said, this is a 4 star film because the visuals and sound (hat-tip: Hans Zimmer) are so goddam impressive. The idea of interstellar travel also makes me very hot and sweaty, so I am a bit biased when it comes to the plot. For most people I suspect this will be a 3 star film because they’re not die-hard space junkies. All in all, a missed opportunity. https://youtube/watch?v=zSWdZVtXT7E
