Saw The Water Diviner yesterday. The film is a good one with some faults. Performances are very good, notably Russell Crowe, Olga Kurylenko, Yilmaz Erdogan and Cem Yilmaz. The story, for all its lumps and occasional improbabilities, is engrossing and never patronises or exploits the audience. As a meditation on the Australian war experience in a global context, its well worth seeing. Notes for popular historians and Australian film-makers: the NZ in ANZAC is there for a purpose. If youre going to get an Australian to play an Englishman, try finding one who can manage it. Britain was far more heavily involved in Gallipoli than Australia and lost far more men: perhaps some day Australia could honour that fact (shortly after hell freezes over). And speaking of things freezing over: Hoyts, in accordance with its aeons-long policy, had the air-con turned up so much you could keep a tub of ice cream frozen for a week - we never go to the flicks without warm clothes.
