Saw a couple of recent posts about kids today and wifi, games and TV. They made me think about my own childhood and how we played with friends in the neighbourhood; The Ping Pong table became a ship and was attacked by pirates. Or a stage for our Shakespeare presentations. Or we draped it in sheets and underneath became a cavern. We made lamps from empty film containers, lovely shiny metal ones with screw tops, and cotton wool and methylated spirits. My best friend made us tie cushions on to our behinds to go roller skating down her road. I rode the cow Mummy won in a church raffle and pretended it was a rodeo steer (and I DID get bucked off!). We had beauty pageants to see who had the most beautiful hand, or foot, or arm. We had rain baths, tearing around the lawn and when the rain was over rode our bicycles through the deepest puddles. We had dog shows, to see who had the most obedient dog. In the mountains we picked tiny wild flowers, fairy paint brushes and ran to get them in water before they wilted (they wilted anyway). LONG walks with Daddy. Billberries and wild raspberries straight into the mouth. Hop Scotch, Jacks, Ouija board, dressing up. Climbing trees and owning bits of them, nobody dared trespass. Hula hoops. Getting raisin bread from the bread man, watching him turn his mule in no space at all at the back of our house. Climbing onto the roof. Funeral services for our dolls.Going to the market with thruppence, cooking what we bought on a charcoal pot, whatever it really tasted like to us it was yum! Pulling Taffy. Licking icing bowls. WiFi and TV didnt rob US!!!
