Saw this posted on Idahoans for Non-Lethal Canine Encounter Training https://facebook/groups/INLCET/permalink/569942786462078/ For anyone wanting ideas of what to say in an email to your police department or city/county officials, here is what went out to the probation offices today: Dear Probation Officers, Last June, I became aware that the same Defensive Tactics: Canine Encounters training the City of Filer contracted in for its officers and city employees was also going to be offered in Boise at the Ada County Sheriffs Training Annex on October 30th (see attached). While speaking to law enforcement officers in an effort to spread the word about this training, we found that many probation officers are also interested in the class, some of which have signed up already. Because of logistics in Idaho, we would like to spread the word to your offices via email, so that everyone has a chance to review the attached information and course material and register if they feel they would benefit. I should mention, that Idaho POST has approved this training for law enforcement continuing education credit and that the training is also listed on the Idaho POST training calendar. Idaho has had five dogs shot by law enforcement officers this year and two of those are headed to the courts. Nation-wide, this number is closer to 400. In other jurisdictions, one incident involved a 10 year old boy being shot in the leg, in three others, officers shot themselves or each other and personal property damage has occurred to homes, vehicles etc. I dont need to make you aware of how serious dog encounters can be to law enforcement officers, not only from the perspective of potential injury to officer and innocent bystanders, but also as a profession. Of perhaps growing concern may be that as result of increased national public pressure, five officers have resigned or their employment was terminated by their employers. Some have been brought up on animal cruelty charges, and just this week, former Raines County Deputy Dooley permanently surrendered his Texas law enforcement license to the courts in a plea bargain to avoid prosecution. Watching the often unfair national trend of public demonization of law enforcement, and realizing that in most instances these officers did not have access to training that would familiarize them with non-lethal forms of protecting themselves, a few of us concerned Idahoans came together to approach Idaho agencies in hopes that together we can create a proactive state-wide policy with regard to use of force against animals. Essential to such a step is that different types of officers review, compare and evaluate training they may have received or is currently available, such as the training coming to Boise on October 30th. I have attached the pertinent info about the upcoming training and applicable training restriction are noted below. For more detailed information, please review the presenters website at celet.us. Our group did not select or bring this particular training to Idaho, we simply hope that since is it coming to our state, law enforcement will take advantage of the offer, review the information presented and evaluate it for its merit.
