Scam Alert! A woman in her early 30s showed up in my driveway in the Marina District, leaning on my car, while my husband and I were doing yard work. She was out of breath and talked and walked as if she had serious problems. She said she was jogging, was out of breath, recuperating from a stroke, and needed money to get her medicine. I decided to give her the benefit of the doubt and drive her to Walgreens, where she said a Walgreens hospital liaison had arranged for her to get a prescription for dizziness filled. Driving her to Walgreens, she told me she lost her job at Kmart because of the stroke, so had no health insurance and couldnt get disability because she had been in prison for a couple of years. The pharmacist had no prescription for her on file. The hospital doctor he called had no file on her, and she had no identification. So I finally accepted the fact that it was all a lie, but decided to just figure she had some other serious problems. I purchased some over-the-counter medication recommended by the pharmacist and food and then dropped her off with bus fare she kept asking for. I did notice she walked a lot better when I dropped her off at Central and 37th! Im concerned my actions may encourage her to come back to our community, so Im warning you before you get caught up in this. In Newport News, VA, where I previously lived, the churches got together and funded an office where folks who showed up asking the church for help could be sent. It served as a safety net for the truly needy until other services could be put in place. It also filtered out the scam artists. I wish we had something like this in our area.
