Scammer Jailed 10 Years For Defrauding Egyptian Friday, July 19, 2013 CameroonPostline -- A Buea based scammer, Valery Che Neba, was, Tuesday, July 16, sentenced to 10 years in prison for defrauding an Egyptian man of circa FCFA 17 million (35,6OO US dollars). His two accomplices, Yannick Ikom Njuh and Elias Kenah Wallang got one year each. The said scammer and his two friends were arrested some time in June 2012 and were charged to court. The charges levied against them included forgery, threat to life, false pretence and cyber criminality contrary to and punishable under section 203(1), 207(a), 302(1) and 118(1) (c) of the Penal Code as well as 78(1) of Law No.2010/012 of 21st December 2010, bearing on cyber security and cyber criminality in Cameroon. Che had succeeded in scamming his Egyptian victim, Anwar Shaker Gaber Mohamed, promising that he was going to supply him with 20 tons of black pepper, 20 tons of white refined sugar, and 40 tons of mixed nuts through a fictitious shipping line called CONTINENTAL FREIGHT FORWARDER. To succeed in his scheme, Che had, in June 2012, forged the signature of the Minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry, Luc Magloire Mbarga Atangana. He had equally forged an official certificate to wit a certificate of registration of company No. 000185. It is with these that he made his unsuspecting victim to believe that he was manager of a company called NLATEN FARM, that deals in black pepper, rice, lentils, sugar, chicks peas and beans. It is only after Anwar Mohamed paid the full sum of 35,600 USD (FCFA 17,800,000) demanded of him that it dawned on him that the entire deal was a scam. When all attempts to reach his “suppliers” failed, he sent Che and his accomplices an email, threatening to come to Cameroon to recover his money. The Post gathered that Che and co. threatened to kidnap and kill their victim if he ever stepped his feet in Cameroon. In spite of the threats, the Egyptian mustered courage and came to Cameroon, sought police protection and subsequently lodged a complaint against his predators. The police immediately swung into action and launched investigations, which led to the arrest of the threesome. After preliminary inquiry, PI, by one of the Examining Magistrates attached to the Fako High Court in Buea, Justice Ching Tom, the three defendants were committed for trial. In September 2012, one of the three, Kenah Wallang, under custody, attempted to escape from the hall of the court. He was only apprehended again around the court premises by a prisons officer. The case initially started at the Buea Magistrate Court, but it was declared that the Magistrate Court was incompetent to handle the matter. It was thus transferred to the High Court, which handled the matter to its logical end. While delivering her judgment, Justice Mrs. Anjorin Enanga, presiding at the High Court, found the three accused persons guilty. The Post learnt that besides false pretence, deceit and threat to life, Che Neba was also given a 10-year-jail term because he forged the signature of the Minister.
