School Bell- Aunt Jewel Goforth had a school bell that she rang to commence and end the day. It was also used to signal the end of any recess period. It was an old hand bell with a worn red handle and pewter looking bell. She used it at Bell and McGlatherry and other schools with it ending up at West Corinth. It sat on the little green metal table at the end of the long hall heading out the east door. The bell was stolen and someone out of guilt brought it back about 3 years before she retired. I told her she out to take the bell and use the electric one if she wants to keep it for a souvenir. When the word got out that she was going to retire, the people honored her with gifts and a ‘This is your life show’. When she went to get the little school bell it was gone and never seen again. I can still after all these years she her hand ringing the bell as it went up and down from ear to waist. It could be heard all around and kids would even ask to get to ring the bell as a treat. Whoever got Aunt Jewel’s bell she forgave you and don’t ask from whom the bell tolls as it tolls for thee.__________________________
