School. s#&t just got real... Parents, it’s that time of year. October just started – and it’s game time. This is the time when it becomes apparent that there may be an issue in school or in a specific subject. Your children are through the ‘back to school’ rush, intro / review lessons are over, and teachers are beginning to tackle new material. Kids may have taken (or will soon take) their first test, and that will be one of your first indications if your child is having trouble. Even before you receive exam results, however, there are a few things you can look for. First, if your child is complaining about a particular teacher, there’s a good chance that she’s struggling in that subject. Her frustration with the material will often come out as frustration with the teacher. Second, if you hear your child procrastinating on an assignment or their daily homework, that is typically a sign of trouble. Most kids will first work on the subjects they like the most / are best at. This leaves the difficult subject for last, and given the almost overwhelming amount of homework in many schools, you will often see the difficult assignment pushed from one night to the next until they are finally forced to stay up late to do the work. At this point they won’t be able to give it their full attention because they are tired and they will therefore likely not learn / perform as well as they could have. This creates a negative cycle, and the feedback loop might drag them down. Third, the most obvious sign that your child is struggling… is if they tell you they’re struggling. Just make sure you ask. Please share / comment if you have any other ideas for telltale signs that your child may be having difficulty as the school year gets into full swing and we’ll look at some proactive solutions in the next post.
