Schools and Guns – A reflection: 2013-10-02 There is a growing, insidious trend in our schools and around our country. It is to undermine and remove the second amendment; and with it our natural right to arms, as protected and defined by our Constitutions. Examples abound, but in the last 2 weeks there have been at least 6 articles I have read about or based on ‘zero tolerance’ on guns. Most stem from schools and public school policy. Two incidents involve teenagers using airsoft (read: TOY) guns: two boys in Virginia were expelled for playing with these (in a yard) before school. Another child in Georgia has been charged for possessing a “weapon”. A 3rd grader was punished for a keychain ‘fob’ that resembles a derringer (the fob was about the size of a quarter). Two are more absurd: A girl punished for wearing an NRA tee shirt (it included an image of a hunter with a gun) because the NRA “Promotes Violence”; and An 8 year old boy punished for using his fingers as an imaginary gun, while playing cops and robbers at recess; again “promoting violence”. The latest article popped up as I started this post. A man in Arizona was contacted by his daughter’s elementary school principal, asking him to NOT wear his uniform or sidearm when he drops her off or picks her up, because other parents were frightened that “a man with a gun” was at the school. Yes, the Father in question is a Uniformed Police Officer. Part of the article below is a spoof, but makes a real point: The indoctrination, this “Zero Tolerance” - without reasoned thought, response or opposition - leads to guns themselves being the root of the evil. From the article: “Children are being taught that guns are not only evil, but that so much as talking about guns in a favorable manner is likely to result in you being the subject of discipline. Children are being taught that have anything to do with guns in today’s education system is likely to impact your academic and professional future.” The only way to break this cycle is to share knowledge, and get people “out of the neutral zone”. Have you introduced anyone new to shooting or helped a new gun owner? How engaged in this issue are you? Have you encouraged others to speak up for their (our) rights? Do you discuss with those who lack knowledge or experience? Do you share your knowledge and positive information, with those that may disagree?
