Science is under attack again in public schools. And this Tuesday - TopicsExpress

Science is under attack again in public schools. And this Tuesday may be our last chance to prevent millions of children across the country from learning bogus science from some influential public school textbooks. In Texas, state-appointed textbook reviewers have been caught filing some alarming—and unconstitutional—objections to how universally accepted principles of science are presented in public school textbooks, including scholarly observations like: "As an educator, parent, and grandparent, I feel very firmly that ‘creation science’ based on Biblical principles should be incorporated into every Biology book that is up for adoption."1 Because the Texas public school system is so large, national textbook makers often tailor their materials to that market. So if Biology turns into Bible-ology in Texas, it could impact how science is taught to children nationwide. This Tuesday, the Texas State Board of Education is holding a public hearing and we’re joining the protest rally outside hosted by our friends at Texas Freedom Network. We want to hand the Board tens of thousands of petition signatures from ACLU supporters telling them to keep their hands off science textbooks. Will you sign this urgent petition now and defend science? U.S. courts have decided time and time again that creationism and other religious dogma have no place in a public school’s science curriculum. Yet anti-science crusaders around the country are still trying to chip away at how our nation’s students are taught fundamental scientific concepts such as evolution and climate change. At a time when American students’ science and math tests scores rank near the bottom of industrialized countries, the last thing we need is another roadblock to preparing our children for success. Sign the urgent petition now telling the Texas State Board of Education to keep their hands off the universally accepted principles of science that are taught in our children’s textbooks. If parents want to teach religious principles to their children at home or their place of worship, that’s their constitutional right. But state Board of Education officials should not be wasting valuable time and resources forcing religious principles into the classroom. Stand with science and defend our children’s textbooks from religious interference by the Texas Board of Education. Sign the urgent petition now, so we can deliver it at the big rally on Tuesday.
