Scripture Study: Helaman 5 29-30 And it came to pass that there came a voice as if it were above the cloud of darkness, saying: Repent ye, repent ye, and seek no more to destroy my servants whom I have sent unto you to declare good tidings. And it came to pass when they heard this voice, and beheld that it was not a voice of thunder, neither was it a voice of a great tumultuous noise, but behold, it was a still voice of perfect mildness, as if it had been a whisper, and it did pierce even to the very soul— Years ago I thought of a call to repentance as a rebuke. Sometimes I was humble enough to take an honest look at myself and see if I needed to make a change, but not always. I have since learned, and as this scriptures reinforces, that repentance is less of a rebuke and more of a gift. A gift to remind us that we need a course correction. After all it is not a loud voice yelling at us about what we have done wrong. It is a soft voice, gently guiding us back to the correct path. If we justify our actions or ignore the still soft voice, eventually it goes away leaving us to find our own way. It is our liahona and only operates under certain conditions. As I consider the nature of or Father in Heaven and Jesus Christ I must consider that He loves us and wants us to be happy. So why would He spend time rebuking us? He is gentle, mild, kind, and He is loving. And the hope is that this love will guide us back to Him. So, then the question becomes, do I love Him enough to listen?
