Searching For Answers by Dee Thao. Very empowering message. What is your identity? What are your values? Hmong value families.. Oh gosh, this literally brought me to tears and moved me. Its so inspirational. As I try to understand who I am, what is my identity... I am Hmong. No doubt, no question, nor do I hesitate to say it. Sometimes, it is easy to forget about who I am, my history, my culture.. What my parents, grandparents, cousins, relatives, and ancestors went through. I will never know of their struggle, first hand. And will never know how terrible, frightening, and painful the struggles were. But the stories that are told, heard, and passed down to generations to generations reminds us of the struggles that our older generations went through. To remind us, who we are. And I value this quite a lot. I want to be able to understand my culture, history, and language. Its quite pathetic to me that I dont even know that much about my own identity. Thats why I want to take the chance now to take any opportunity I can to learn about my culture, history, and language. For I VALUE this. And it is intriguing to know that quite a lot of Hmong American children are losing sight and knowledge about their culture, history, and language. I am not an exception. American schooling teach English. As Hmong children learn English, they tend to lose knowledge of their own language, for it is not taught on a regular basis (Reading and Writing). I want to be a part of the solution to fix this problem.. To teach others about Hmong, the language, customs, and so forth. Sigh, wouldnt that be amazing? Once the elders are gone, who will pass down the stories? Who will remind us of who we are? Dee Thaos study and video express a powerful message and Im very inspired and motivated. I want to be able to trace back to my roots too. To visit where my parents lived and my origins. To understand how life is different here compared to other places. And Ive thought of possibly becoming a writer, to share stories and to let voices be heard. To share about the struggles that people go through every day. To be able to help those in need.. I just wish I just had access to those opportunities! I just gotta seek for it! Thats why Im taking action now. and that is why I want to go to a college with those opportunities available for me...
