On September 10, weeks after after the mixed breed dog was surrendered by his owner to the Ozark City Animal Shelter in Ozark, Alabama, a veterinarian administered what should have been a lethal dose of the drug which is designed to end lives. According to the Associated Press, Wanda Snell, an animal control officer, witnessed the injection and saw the dog, dubbed Lazarus, stop moving - by all appearances, he appeared to be dead. The next morning, when workers returned to the facility, the dead dog was up and about, walking and drinking water, almost as if nothing had happened. Lazarus, named for a biblical man who is brought back from the dead, has cheated death more than once. Prior to being dropped at the animal control agency, he had been struck by a car. Cortney Blankenship, a shelter volunteer, took to Facebook shortly after the Lazarus woke up, and pleaded for the miraculous dog to find a home - she wrote, in part: “ I absolutely have to find this animal a way out. As crazy as it may sound this dog survived euthanasia. After two doses of the fatal medication this animal STILL woke up.
