See if you can make sense of this story about the sentencing of a repeat offender who killed a cyclist and essentially got off with a slap on the wrist because we cant: The judge said that if McCulloch had been keeping a proper lookout for the cyclists – who were wearing high-visibility clothing – he would have seen them. “I must send a message to the community that inattentive driving – and inattentive driving in the case of cyclists – is to be taken seriously,” he said. He then handed down a 4 month suspended custodial sentence? In sharp contrast, the Tasmanian Parliament is currently debating a bill that would mandate 3-month imprisonment for protesters - presumably aimed at the those trying to protect old growth forests. That bill has even been criticised by the United Nations this week (un.org.au/2014/09/10/un-experts-urge-tasmania-to-drop-its-anti-protest-bill/). So what gives Tasmania? Its a more severe crime to protest than to be negligent and kill someone - if that person happens to be riding a bike?
