Seeking Change That Is Within Your Grasp From The Reflective Counselor by F. Gregory Coffey , Maureen C. Kessler How do we commit ourselves to change, so that all that we are seeking comes within our grasp? Well, to begin with, we must accept that we do not think ourselves into new ways of living, we live ourselves into new ways of thinking. Awareness, acceptance, and action, in that order, can set us on a path to lasting transformation. Living mindfully within this transformational triangle, our lives can unaccountably transform. However, daily and persistent attention to the task is required if we are to reap all of the joyous rewards of living a mindful existence. Before beginning, it is important to appreciate that our commitment to such mindful living runs counter to cultural norms, most especially the prevailing norms of our professional world. Almost every societal stimulus charges: “be more,” “have more,” “do more.” Yet our counter-cultural attempt to live within the “transformational triangle” equates to crossing over a bridge into a land in which a different language is softly chanted: “we are enough,” “we have enough,” “we do enough.” Our inner-directed approach to lives may not be understood by many. However, in committing to operate within the realm of transformation, we are no longer living our lives by reference to “the good opinion of others.”
