Seeking a place to rest, an estimated 35,000 walrus have come ashore in northwest Alaska for lack of finding their preferred icy outpost. This photo was taken during a recent NOAA aerial marine mammal survey. Walruses are managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, but climate change and the loss of sea ice habitat affects all Arctic species.
