Seeking some suggestions regarding an overheating problem. The details: 2005 Outback LL Bean with the H6 3.0L 213,000 miles Noticed it over heating about 6 months ago, and took it in. It had all the symptoms of a head gasket failure (bubbles in the overflow tank, an overfilled overflow tank that didnt return to the radiator once cooled, etc.) I did the exhaust gas tester, but it wasnt really conclusive. I finally took it into a shop that has worked on quite a few Subarus, they did a pressure test and said that it didnt loose anything. They suggested a new radiator cap. I bought it and the car has been perfect through city driving in Ohio with 90+ degree days. Took a trip to Texas (arrived last night) and it the temp gauge shot up when we got stopped in some construction. I pulled off, let it cool a little and just kept in a low gear with high RPMs to keep the water pump moving a lot of fluid around. It worked well enough to get us to Texas, and when I checked this morning once it had time to cool it had definitely been pushing coolant out of the cap of the overflow. I added about a half gallon of water to the radiator. I spent a lot of time on subaruoutback.org when I first started having this problem and self diagnosed it as a head gasket. I was pretty dumbfounded when they said that it wasnt. Now Im 1,000 miles from home and a little anxious about the drive back next week. Any suggestions on what else it might be, or do you think my initial head gasket idea is still the best guess. Sorry this is so long. Im hoping by posting here Ill get some good ideas within the next few days. Thanks!
