Senator Feinstein, Thank you for your recent email explaining - TopicsExpress

Senator Feinstein, Thank you for your recent email explaining your support for womens health care. While we may disagree on the merits of the Hobby Lobby case, I would encourage a more accurate characterization of the facts involved, instead of clouding reality to leverage political support through a faulty appeal to emotion. Specifically, your recent email to me mis-characterized this as a case against [all] uses of contraception, when, in fact, this was not the case. The right to be relieved from the HHS mandate to financially cover abortifacients, according to the owners deeply held religious convictions, was at issue in the case. (See supremecourt.gov/opinions/13pdf/13-354_olp1.pdf.) Also, your email falsely intoned that, since ninety-nine percent of American women have used contraception, this case might somehow be a decision intended to eventually deny most all American women this basic and essential health care. Again, the SCOTUS decision in the Hobby Lobby case had nothing to do with the 80% of contraceptives used by 99% of American women. If all 99% of American women end up working at Hobby Lobby sometime during their careers, they can still be corporately covered for any of the 16 other medically approved methods of contraception. Lastly, I find it politically aggrandizing for your email to express your concern that, because of this decision, other large corporations might be allowed to deny other essential medical benefits, as if abortifacients are truly essential medical benefits, or that the SCOTUS decision would so carelessly be misread by other large corporations, enticing them into such superfluous litigation. In essence, the concerns expressed in your email, and the bill you proudly claim to have co-sponsored (S. 2578) amounts to a straw man logical fallacy, and is unbecoming rhetoric to truth-seekers. I would request more accurate communication in the future.
