Sensation gripped a Kanksa village here after a young man failed to kill his sister-in-law despite fierce attempts, and then killed himself consuming poison this morning. Supriyo Dutta ~ a resident of Panagarh village ~ had been to the Kaniska Road residence of his elder brother in Durgapur Steel Township and picked up his sister-in-law, Mrs Runu Dutta, on his motorbike, offering to buy her a sari. Dutta, however, had a feud with his elder brother Swarup over family property. The woman told police that Dutta, on the pretext of buying her a sari, took her to a jungle and proposed to marry her. Burdwan SP S M H Meerza said: “When she vehemently refused, the youth tried to throttle her first and then tried to pour poison in her mouth that he was carrying in a bottle in his pocket.” But she managed to escape by biting into Dutta’s hand and starting to scream. Local villagers then came to her rescue. The youth, anticipating a mass attack, then consumed all the poison in the bottle himself. He succumbed on the way to the hospital.
