Sensational Skin! By Andra Campitelli, ND (Follow on Twitter) Many of us are concerned about how to keep our skin looking soft, smooth and clear! So, let’s take a look at some of the key things we can do make sure our skin look as healthy as it can! Many of us try changing skin care products, get facials, use masks and treatments which only address the surface of the skin. But, skin health also stems from the inside and is influenced by our environment, our diet and most importantly, our nutrient status. There are many vitamins that we can turn to in order get us that clear skin we’re all looking for! Vitamin C Vitamin C is well known for its role in boosting the immune system. However, it is a very powerful antioxidant that plays an equally large role in the health of our skin. Vitamin C is essential for the production of collagen and other important chemicals that make up the building blocks of our connective tissue and which also play a role in wound healing. Recent studies are finding that vitamin C may play a role in combating the damage caused by sun exposure. It does this through its antioxidant properties which fight the free radicals produced in our skin from over-exposure to the sun. A dose of 500 to 1000 mg seems to show these benefits and is amplified when combined with vitamin E. Vitamin C may also play a role in combating the signs of aging, such as wrinkles and sun spots. Truestar Solution: TrueC Vitamin E Vitamin E is another powerful antioxidant. In addition to its role in reducing the harmful effects caused by sun exposure, research is finding that 400IU a day plays a role in reducing the risk of skin cancer. Some studies find that vitamin E, in combination with vitamin A, can reduce the risk by up to 70%. Levels of vitamin E are often low in individuals who suffer from acne and supplementation can show improvement in this condition. Supplementation may also reduce wrinkles, make skin appear firmer and a little smoother. Vitamin A Vitamin A, a fat soluble vitamin, plays many essential roles in the body and also plays a role in keeping our skin looking healthy and in the repair and maintenance of our skin. Those of us with low vitamin A levels may see symptoms such as dry, flaking skin. Zinc Zinc is a mineral that is well known for its diverse roles in immune health, wound healing and cartilage synthesis. It also plays a vital role in the health of our skin and specifically in clearing skin conditions such as acne. It works by helping to control oil production and may help to heal acne lesions as well as control the formation of new lesions. Additionally, zinc deficiency is often associated with acne itself. Selenium Selenium is another mineral and powerful antioxidant that may also play a role in the protection of our skin from skin cancers when taken orally. It may also protect the skin from sun damage and reduce the risk of sun burns. Truestar Solution: TrueAntioxidant Protect This is a powerful blend of vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin A, selenium AND zinc – so, all the nutrients you need! Alpha Lipoic Acid Alpha lipoic acid is one of our most powerful antioxidants, more so than vitamin E and vitamin C, and is key when it comes to our skin and aging. This antioxidant can penetrate water and oil, which most other antioxidants can’t, meaning it can affect our cells on both the inside and out. It has the ability to neutralize skin damage and may also reduce the risk of skin cancer. It may also repair skin cells that have been damaged by pollution and even smoking. Truestar Solution: TrueCoQ Plus, a powerful source of CoQ10 and alpha lipoic acid. Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) The final key component to skin health is our EFAs. The health benefits of EFAs are extensive, and we now have one more to add to the list. If you have dry skin, are prone to inflammation, or if you suffer from white and black heads, then you are most likely lacking in your EFAs! They are also essential in maintaining our natural oil barrier. The key is to ensure a balance in our omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. Many of us are lacking in our omega-3s and have an over-abundance of omega-6, so get your omega-3 supplements to maintain that balance and get healthy skin! Truestar Solution: TrueOmega It’s also important to ensure that your nutrient status stays optimized, so take your multivitamin, keep up your exercise regime and don’t forget to stay hydrated and protect your skin from the sun!
