Lawrence ,[email protected],[email protected],[email protected] Subject: TAKE THE BULL BY THE HORNS & STOP THE NEW STANDARDIZED TESTS! Dear Superintendent Carvallo & School Board members, It is obvious that parents, teachers, & some public officials do not believe these new standardized tests should be taken, period! These tests have not been tested which goes down the same path as Common Core which also has never been tested. You School Board members DO have the power. You CAN: 1)come up with a resolution & vote to give ALL parents an opt-out from any Common Core based test(pilot, field, or regular). 2)forbid any further implementation of curriculum based on and addressing CC standards 3)eliminate use of CC standards in Miami Dade County school District 4) develop/adopt any other set of standards in ELA, math, or science you choose 5) require their K-12 curriculum to address these other standards once they are developed/adopted. Florida State Law does NOT explicitly forbid local school boards from legally adopting different standards or give the state the authority to require that Every child must take the tests adopted by the state boards Therefore, you DO have the legal authority to take control, take a stand, & catch up to other school districts around the country who are sincerely putting the education of their children first. Take a Stand and uphold the trust given to you by parents when they entrusted the education of their children. If you should find information different than above I would like in writing The Florida statute that bans you from carrying out the above actions. If you find the Florida statute that gives the state the authority to require every child take these tests, please send it. Many parents and teachers have peeled back the onion and are realizing that these tests are Not benefiting students or teachers. Spending a ridiculous amount of time studying to take tests which does not necessarily contain information a child has learned does nothing to help a child learn or love to learn. However, the more frequent the testing of our students the fatter someone’s pockets are growing. Every test given equals dollars per child to the testing company. Tests costs $15-$30 per test administered, maybe more. Meanwhile libraries, computer rooms, and other areas are hijacked from their regular use, to give administer these tests. Learning is put on hold in order to test test test. Students do Not know more than students did 20 years ago when they did not have continuous testing. Currently the agenda is to teach students how to take a test NOT how to think or give them the desire to learn. Excerpt from article : Ultimately, according to Carvalho, the students will be the ones to pay the price with potentially lower test scores, which would lead to schools receiving lower grades. Teachers, whose performances are based on the grades from their schools and students, may also be put in jeopardy if grades go down. Carvalho plans to continue lobbying the State of Florida and education officials to put off the exam for at least a year. I think it is reckless and irresponsible to move forward with that exam this year, he said. wsvn/story/26095933/new-standardized-test-to-replace-fcat Here is some additional information for all of you with links(have many More) Hamilton County School officials estimate students spend a quarter of their time taking, preparing for tests timesfreepress/news/2013/aug/04/hamilton-county-school-officials-estimate-students/ youtube/watch?v=xCoOv_DwaAk The Story Killers-How The Common Core Destroys Minds & Souls Urge you to watch this video. Professor of History Terrence O. Moore does an amazing job of explaining the video title. The Coming Common Core Meltdown Instead we’re getting an overhyped all-state implementation drive that seems more like a marketing campaign than an educational plan. And I use the word marketing advisedly, because another defining characteristic of the Common Core project is rampant profiteering.washingtonpost/blogs/answer-sheet/wp/2014/01/23/the-coming-common-core-meltdown/ Pamela Evans
