September 19: Looks can be deceiving. Does that picture tell the whole story, or is the lighting set just so maybe this or that does not show up very well? What about those makeover images where in the “before” picture the subject appears to have not had a bath for a week and the “after” gives the impression they are ready for the red carpet. And those weight-loss ads? September 19, 1863 the first of two days of massive fighting at the Battle of Chickamauga took place. The battle involved approximately 125,000 troop but the results were deceiving, however. Despite suffering 700 more fatalities and nearly 5000 more wounded than the Union, it was a Confederate victory. That was important for the South’s efforts and morale, which had been deflated since the critical loss at Gettysburg, Pa., nearly three months earlier. But the South was not able to follow up. Barely more than two months later, General U.S. Grant drove the Confederates from Chattanooga and they never fully recovered. How often have we had to deal with things that appear one way on the outside only to wind up with a different result? How often do we put on our “happy” face so others will not discover the challenges really are going on in our lives? Do not let anyone deceive you that materials things can bring you more joy and satisfaction than a relationship with Jesus. “I tell you this so that no one may deceive you by fine-sounding arguments. For though I am absent from you in body, I am present with you in sprit and delight to see how orderly you are and how firm your faith in Christ is.” (Colossians 2: 4-5)
