September 23,1863-(pt.1)-President Lincoln, his Cabinet and military leaders meet and discuss how to relieve Rosecrans at Chattanooga. They finally decide to send the 11th & 12th Corps of the Army of the Potomac (under General Joseph Hooker), west to Chattanooga. Red tape is cut, rail lines are commandered and the rescue begins expeditiously. By the 25th, the 11th Corps was headed to Alabama and by October 2nd, the 12th Corps was passing through Nashville. It was considered a brilliant logistical operation. Meanwhile, Confederates continue to chip-away at the Union defenses of the city.
