September 28, 365 CE: Roman usurper Procopius (top right coin), maternal cousin to Emperor Julian the Apostate in the West, bribes two legions in Constantinople to join him in overthrowing Eastern Emperor Valens (bottom right bust) and proclaims himself Roman emperor. He captured Constantinople as well as the provinces of Bithynia and Thrace, but Valens gathered his much larger contingent and they met eight months later at the Battle of Thyatira on May 27, 366 CE, where Procopius was soundly defeated as most of his troops deserted. He attempted to escape, but two of his own men betrayed him to Valens to be imprisoned. If they thought they had spared themselves, they were wrong - Valens ordered the execution of all three.
