Septembers Jewel The night is deep and long. I sleep in the dense comfort of green swaying branches. Alone. As the darkness falls from the sky a quiet whisper of knowledge settles within me and I know I will leave my haven; leave the fading red flowers and nectar reservoirs which I have defended so valiantly through my first season. For now, let me rest in the chilly shelter of my cypress tree. I descend like the darkness that surrounds me, heart slowing, head dipping, and I dream through the stillness of night. It is my innate will to survive that lifts my head in the coldest hour of the morning and stirs me to take action. I seek nourishment even though I am plump and round with feasting. There is an aching within me that urges me to travel far and abandon the place of my hatching, my nestling life and first summer of my youth. I will leave her garden now. Where will these wings carry me? I taste the single drop of nectar that falls from her eye and I am gone.
