Serbia has had adopted an animal welfare legislation, but - TopicsExpress

Serbia has had adopted an animal welfare legislation, but unfortunately the law is almost never enforced. This has lead to animals being mistreated almost on a daily basis. Many local governments put down stray dogs in the most inhumane ways; on other occasions, ordinary citizens decide to ‘take matters into their own hands’ and destroy the animals without any remorse (by hanging them, dragging them behind a car etc. you name it). Sometimes children are involved in this! There is no procedure on how to report such act and authorities such as the police or veterinary institutions are not interested in solving them. A proper way to deal with this issue is to enforce animal police squads at a national level. Such an institution will be able to deal exclusively with such problem and make sure the law is enforced. It will be made up of policemen which have received special training, people who are fully competent and interested in doing their job. In addition, an educational program that would teach Serbians about animal welfare should be launched. It would play a major factor in the quest to improve animal welfare in the country. Sadly, the requests of the animal lovers from all over the world have fallen into deaf ears. There has been virtually no action taken by the government, despite all the things that have happened and in spite of great media attention. However, I am confident that the two of the most important figures in Serbia – tennis players Novak Djokovic and Ana Ivanovic – would be able to make a difference. We thus respectfully ask them to intervene and ask the Serbian government to take the welfare of the animals seriously and implement measures which will diminish animal abuse. Please sign the petition and ask these two wonderful people to step up and speak for the voiceless! Animal Petitions by YouSignAnimals.org.
