Seriously, yall, I can feel your hearts bursting right through Mark Zuckerberg land with your posts about kids starting high school or leaving for college or simply fleeing the nest. Right now my little girl is Googling ways she can permanently affix herself to my left leg. She mirrors my every step. Shouts MAMA! in a tone that says Ive taken leave of my senses if I think Im going to the bathroom alone. Shows me birds and boats and toes and pieces of lint ... and orchestrates my day like a 28-pound dictator wearing lopsided bows, and noodles stuck to her belly button. Demands the peas right out of my mouth, even though shes just had dinner, three helpings to be exact. Needs to matter-of-factly wipe the non-existent butt crack of her gray stuffed puppy for 10 minutes while I sit no more than an inch away, diaper at the ready. Its hard to imagine that this child will ever go anywhere without me, much less to a dorm room or a life thats very separate from mine, with long-distance eye rolls when I text to check on the status of her winter coat. Oh, sweet shadow girl, stick by my side as long as you can.
