Service with Honor September 20th, 2013 Veterans Corner by Ronald Verini I compliment our National Guard members for helping with the disastrous fires plaguing our communities these last few months. Thanks for your service and Job Well Done! Veteran Advocates of Ore-Ida had an opportunity to participate in the ‘Hero2Hired’ event and cheered as 71 job offers were made on the spot, and 200 more were extended to our veterans. That made this years effort more successful for our veteran job seekers. One of the reasons for the high job offers was the training sessions that occurred prior to the event. At these sessions résumés were developed, how to dress, what to expect on the interviews, and other tips for our veterans before they approached their potential employers. The preplanning paid off big time. Check out this web site that Charlotte Fugate shared with us: govx, which is the largest e-commerce destination for military and government members including our first responders (police, fire, EMS). This web site provides discounts of over 4000 products to those who protect and serve. The discounts range from about 25 to 50% off retail. All you have to do is register, which costs nothing. Thank you Charlotte for thinking about us. I noticed they even have select MLB and NFT tickets for sports fans. We have received some follow-up data from the VA/Community Mental Health Summit, which we attended in Boise last month. Here are some of the ‘Action Items’ that received consensus: 1) expand Rural Mental Health Services to better meet the needs of our vets and families: 2) develop a collaborative, give-and-take relationship between the VA and non-VA organizations and Agencies: 3) how to meet the Mental Health needs of National Guard members and Reservists who are not eligible for VA care: 4) can the VA, the State of Idaho and other care providers share a common web-site that can be a repository for all resources, Federal, State, Private. If you have any ideas as to how these points can be accomplished, please write, email or call me. The 1st living US Marine in 41 years and the third living serviceman to be honored as a recipient of the Medal of Honor, Sergeant Dakota Meyer, will be joining the Concerned Veterans for America “Defend Freedom Tour”. The cross-country tour in October is designed to show Americans that we fought for our Freedoms and that we are here now to defend those Freedoms here at home. Speaking of Marines, Lt. Dan (actor Gary Sinise) was just named “Honorary Marine”. Marine Corps Commandant, General James Amos, pinned the eagle, globe and anchor on actor Gary Sinise for the work he has done assisting veterans of all services. In the Marines history of more than 200 years, this title has been awarded to only 76 people. (In contrast, Yale University in over 275 years has awarded 2,786 honorary degrees.) Ms. Jo Ann Rooney, Principal Deputy Defense Undersecretary for Personnel and Readiness, has been nominated to the #2 position in the Navy Department, as Undersecretary of the Navy. Way to go…! “ Honor is simply the morality of superior men.” H.L. Mencken.
