December 3, 2013 - Greenpeace accuses Romania of serious abuses committed by Romanian Gendarmerie to Pungesti, Vaslui who bullied people blocking roads and access to the press area to facilitate commencement of shale gas exploration by Chevron. Exploration agreements provided that companies are now challenged in court, and the citizens are opposed to these works for more than two months organizing a camp local resistance against shale gas. On December 2, at around 5 am, 800 gendarmes intervened in force, acting violently on the 30 members of the resistance camp Pungesti, driving them some of them to the police station and compiling abuse fines criminal cases. In doing so, security forces violated citizens right to free speech and peaceful protest as guaranteed by the constitution, just government should guarantee, preferring instead to protect the interests of the U.S. company Chevron. What happened to Pungesti creates a very dangerous precedent that endangers the involvement of civil society and democracy. If the authorities in facilitating the work of Chevron Pungesti unwilling local population follow other papers across the country, and iconic areas such as Vama Veche, Costineşti or Felix will be irreparably damaged, said Crisanta Lungu, CEO Greenpeace Romania.
