Session 37 (Part One): The party surveyed the necropolis and found - TopicsExpress

Session 37 (Part One): The party surveyed the necropolis and found seven moderate sized crypts, three large octagonal crypts to the north of the compound, and what appeared to be a crematorium just north of the wrecked carriage. Proceeding to the crematorium, the party found a defiled sacred font to Therin. Basilah and Natalia worked together and purified the font. The party received a blessing from Therin for their efforts. They also picked up a magical mitral dagger for their efforts from the font itself. The party then entered the crematorium itself and were assaulted by three huge fire elementals and an efreeti noble. After defeating them, the spirit of the efreet thanked them for freeing him from his prison and from the madness that had settled upon him. In thanks for this service, he told the party about a hidden panel in the north wall that opened to reveal treasure including a magic key. He also told them that even greater treasures than those in the hidden panel awaited them elsewhere in the Tomb of the Iron Medusa. While he had never seen these vaults, he learned much listening to the long-gone caretakers of the crematorium. He told the party that the inmost vault, the crypt of Bartolomae Adella, the last head of the Daellum branch, can be reached by a teleporter, and that four objects are needed to unlock that teleporter. The magic key found in the hidden panel was one of those four objects. He only knew vague descriptions of the other three objects—“a dagger befouled, Thrasillus’s voice, and a sister’s keepsake,” but not where they could be in the necropolis or the tombs below. After imparting this advice, the efreet’s spirit sighed in relief and then faded away. The party then investigated the seven smaller sepulchres throughout the necropolis, leaving the only one oriented to the compass points for last. In the first crypt Bonnie and Nathanial caught a cursed disease from investigating the tomb. Natalia and Basilah helped them overcome this. Natalia then did a card reading and determined that they did not have to enter any tomb where this disease was rampant. A quick survey led them back to the odd sepulchre out, oriented on the compass points. Where the other crypts had lost the markings on the central sarcophagus through time, the central slab here was still legible and read “Marcus Iulius Adella, 711–758, Great Patriarch of Our Clan, Died Valiantly at the Battle of Istavala Vale Saving Prince Abelard from the Undead Hordes of Desert of Desolation, Earning the King’s Gratitude. Herein Lies Our Claim to Nobility. May Great Woe Befall Any Who Would Violate His Most Sacred Rest.” Mytonfield realized that the Adella’s founder was actually named Marcus Junius Adella, from the Empire of Arvanoth. Since it was highly unlikely that such a mistake would be made on his tomb, Nathanial pushed on the lid and it slid back to reveal a stairway down into the earth. The party descended to find catacombs which were composed primarily of narrow, low-ceilinged corridors riddled with burial niches. Each niche had the bones arranged in different ways, such as all jawbones and the like. The air was stale, and all areas were lit as though by flickering torchlight though no such illumination could be found. The party immediately found the true tomb of Marcus Junius, but found it to be empty. The party began to explore the catacombs and found a large chamber with four mummies on the north wall and lit by two light globes on the ceiling. When they entered the chamber, two shining children—horrible outsider fiends—attacked. After they were defeated, Bonnie looted the mummies’ corpses. She was particularly taken with a violin of blasting, an instrument that could be used to cause mass sonic destruction through use. Further investigations of the catacombs led Khavros to an obvious secret door that had not been well tended to. Inside they found a chamber that had been looted except for three urns. Bonnie checked them for magic and magic auras could be found in two of them. Opening them up, the party discovered a large amount of treasure over looked by those that had raided the treasury.
