Setback for Smoko Smoko on ice again Jun 26, 2014 Belmont Park StandA new injury to Smoko has halted the sprinters return to the racetrack. Unbeaten at five starts, Smoko was due to resume in Saturdays Perth Racing Handicap (1000m) before his first challenge in a feature event in the $100,000 Beaufine Stakes (1000m) at Belmont Park on July 12. Recurring hoof abscesses forced Smoko out of the summer sprint series and he has not raced since winning over 1200m as a $1.24 favourite at Ascot on November 9. Trainer Ross Price, who saddled up the successful Foxalicious at Belmont yesterday, said Smoko had a minor nick to his hind fetlock. It blew up and we treated it with antibiotics but it has just taken time, Price said. He is pretty good now but he missed an important gallop last week. It will depend on how well he comes up in his work on whether he goes first-up into the Beaufine. The Beaufine kicks off the winter sprint series with the HG Bolton Sprint (1200m) on July 26 an alternative starting point for the Snitzel four-year-old. Perth Racing
