Seven weeks ago today, I created our group Smartphone Astronomy. I had just posted a photo of the Sun captured on my Samsung Galaxy S2 on another FB site and quite frankly, was rather annoyed by a persons comments (who does not seem to post any photos herself) criticising the quality of the image. Now, Im not the most experienced astronomer, but as I have been around photography for many years now, I firmly believe the quality of the camera in most good smartphones is more that acceptable for astrophotography and this persons comments were unwarranted. More importantly, for many people they represent an economical - and sometimes only - means of sharing the views from their telescopes with others. I for one am enjoying the simplicity of using my smartphone in an observing session, so much that these days I rarely use my DSLR or CCD camera. But you may be wondering why I am writing this and why I have mentioned seven weeks? Its because we now have over ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY members and our ranks keep growing.
