Seventeen years ago tonight I went into labor more than a month early, and brought into this world a tiny, fragile preemie, and took him home from the hospital the day after he was born. The vicious cycle of pump, feed, sterilize, sleep 20 minutes, repeat turned into months of playing, laughing, discovering the world through new eyes, and loving the sweetest, most amazing young man Ive ever known. As you grew as a child, I grew as a mother, and together we grew as people. Youre no longer that tiny, fragile baby I took home from the hospital by myself, but a wonderful, loving, big-hearted, smart, strong young man who I am proud to call my son. Before we know it, youll be flying the nest to discover the world for yourself, but I will always remember those early months when it was just the two of us, and how I would lay there and just marvel at how incredible you were. This was the song I would hear as I laid there with you. At first I found myself just willing you to breathe, afraid to close my eyes.
