Several readers have asked me about favorite charities. Throughout our working years, Faye and I have endeavored to tithe. Having trained and worked at Childrens Hospital of Los Angeles for many years, I know what a great institution it is, staffed by brilliant and dedicated people. So it’s been a pleasure for us to be able to endow a fund in the hospital’s Division of Hematology-Oncology with an emphasis on the emotional care of kids with cancer and blood diseases. We’ve also set up a fund at my alma mater, USC, to help graduate students in psychology fund their research, as well as an endowment that funds an entire graduate position. Recently, we added a new fund to help build a new psychology clinic at USC, a facility that will continue to offer low-cost mental health treatment to members of the neighboring community. Our contributions have also included the arts – numerous museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s musical instruments department and the wonderful Chamber Music program in Santa Fe, NM. Last spring we had the pleasure of attending to the debut of a symphony we endowed in honor of the Jerusalem Symphony’s 75th anniversary. And recently, we got a great kick out of helping rehab some elderly rhinos at the L.A. zoo. But in general, our priorities have centered around children and education.
