Severe Weather Warning for destructive winds, heavy rain and abnormally high tides for people in the Central West, Lower West, South West, Great Southern and Central Wheat Belt forecast districts Issued at 2:00 pm WST on Tuesday 17 June 2014. For people in parts of WA southwest of a line from Kalbarri to Morawa to Corrigin to Walpole. This includes people in, near or between the following towns: Geraldton, Northampton, Jurien Bay, York, Mandurah, Bunbury, Busselton, Margaret River, Bridgetown, Katanning and the Perth Metropolitan area. Weather Situation A strong cold front is currently moving across western parts of the SW Land Division. The cold front is likely to cause WIDESPREAD DAMAGING WINDS to 100 kilometres per hour that could result in DAMAGE TO HOMES AND PROPERTY. In isolated areas DANGEROUS GUSTS in excess of 125 kilometres per hour could cause SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE OR DESTRUCTION TO HOMES AND PROPERTY. HEAVY RAINFALL that may lead to FLASH FLOODING is possible with the passage of the cold front over areas south of Jurien Bay. HIGHER THAN NORMAL TIDES may cause FLOODING OF LOW-LYING COASTAL AREAS. The cold front moved through the Perth area between 12pm and 2pm, and conditions over Perth are expected to ease over the next hour. This is typical weather for this time of the year but winds may cause damage to property and make road conditions hazardous. The following wind gusts have been recorded: 111 kilometres per hour at Busselton Jetty at 9:42am 106 kilometres per hour at Rottnest Island at 12:11pm 104 kilometres per hour at Cape Naturaliste at 9:00am Witchcliffe has recorded 69mm of rain since 7am this morning. A separate Severe Weather Warning [IDW28002] has been issued for areas along the south coast between Margaret River and Bremer Bay for damaging winds tonight and early Wednesday morning. The Department of Fire and Emergency Services advises that people should: If outside find safe shelter away from trees, power lines, storm water drains and streams. Close your curtains and blinds, and stay inside away from windows. Unplug electrical appliances and do not use land line telephones if there is lightning. If there is flooding, create your own sandbags by using pillow cases filled with sand and place them around doorways to protect your home. If boating, swimming or surfing leave the water. Do not drive into water of unknown depth and current. Slow down and turn your headlights on. Be alert and watch for hazards on the road such as fallen power lines and loose debris. If it is raining heavily and you can not see, pull over and park with your hazard lights on until the rain clears. If your home or property has significant damage, like a badly damaged roof or flooding, call the SES on 132 500. The next warning will be issued by 5:00 pm WST Tuesday.
