Severe weather conditions have hit coffee crops in South America, meaning global supply for 2015 is at risk. “Coffee rust” is a disease which weakens coffee trees and, combined with the poor weather, could result in shortages of 7.1 million bags of coffee. Current shortfalls have been met by reserve stockpiles, however future shortages look imminent. Coffee beans are a vital commodity for the Brazilian economy.
