Sewing has long run in my family. For many reasons from sewing for necessity, because you have 8 children, or because you have just immigrated from Germany. to sewing for the art and pleasure of it. This is my Grandmothers crystal chandelier. It was the main stay above her dining room table for as long as I can remember. Holiday meals, puzzles and patterns have all been lit by its soft glow over the years. I dont think of Grandmas house without thinking of it and the soft bells and chimes of the grandfather clock. A recent move caused this wonderful fall of crystal to no longer have a place in her home so it has found a home in my studio. My grandmother is a marvelous seamstress sewing everything from childrens clothes, to quilts, to pageant queen dresses. From a young age she inspired me to think beyond just purchasing a garment to creating them. My mother is an equally talented seamstress. From an equally young age I watched her take on historical clothing with gusto. She has an eye for detail and precision that very few people have. She knows precisely how to embellish any fabric or trim to make it extraordinary. In my teenage years my aunt Amy took risks with fabric. Making fantastic creations out of ribbons, chain mail, and sumptuous fabrics. She thought outside the box and as I started to sew watching her inspired me to consider fabric in all its dimensions. Without the soft glow of this chandelier and the light that it has cast on all the women in my life I am sure that I would not be the seamstress that I am today so I am very excited to have it hanging in my studio to light all my creativity.
