Shabanas birth name is Ratna. Her family is originated in dabuwa Raozan area in Chittagong. She started her acting career in 1960s. She first acted in film Natun Sur in 1962 at the age of 9. She first appeared in a Urdu film Chakori in 1967. It was directed by Ehtesham. He set her stage-name Shabana. Since then she is known as Shabana. Shabana launched her career with the 1967 film Chakori opposite Nadeem. In the late sixties, she starred in a number of films which could not do well at box office. In the mid-seventies, she started gaining success when she starred opposite top actor Razzak in a number of films. Before 1973, she established herself as one of the leading actresses of FDC alongside Babita, ending the sole sway of Kabari for more than a decade. She was first noticed in the song Shudhu Gaan Geye Porichoy sung by Sabina Yasmin. It made her an overnight star. It was in 1972 film Obujh Mon. In the 1980s, she lessened working with Razzak since she tasted success with erstwhile budding actor Alamgir. The duo very soon gained nationwide popularity and most of their films did well at the box office. By the mid 1980s, Shabana-Alamgir pair became the most sought-after pair. Shabana shared on screen with him in the blockbusters like Bhat De, Ranga Bhabi and Kajer Beti Rahima. She acted over 300 films in Bangla & Urdu and also one Hindi. She acted with actors like Nadeem, Razzak, Bulbul Ahmed, Prabir Mitra, Shawkat Akbar, Subhash Dutta, Rahman, Syed Hasan Imam, Uzzal, Alamgir, Jashim, ATM Shamsuzzaman, Khasru, Sohel Rana, Mahmud Koli, Ilyas Kanchan, Wasim, Humayun Faridi, Javed Sheikh and Rajesh Khanna. Shabana and Alamgir pair was considered as the most successful one after Razzak-Kabari.
